John Nichols West Somerton 1700's

Good morning

i am looking for the birth & parents of John Nichols.
He married Martha Johnson in West Somerton Norfolk on the 6th November 1776.

There are a number of Nichols families in the Yarmouth & Flegg areas and attempting to find the correct one is proving difficult.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I presume you know he was a Widower when he married Martha Johnsons (sic) (Source FreeREG)

There is a copy of the register on Familysearch same date under Bishops Transcripts
John Nichols widower and Martha Johnson spinster of West Somerton.
So you should be looking for a first marriage and a gentleman a little older.
There are two children for a John and Mary Nickols just before this in the parish
Elizabeth 17.7.1771
Ed 19.3.1775.buried Dec 1778.

At a guess I'd go with the marriage at Hemsby 6.4.1766 to Mary Barnwell wit Thomas Cook and Edmond Nichols, over 3.1.1771 at Brisley to Mary Whitby and 26.12.1767 at Norwich to Mary Wasp.,although both parties say they are from Hemsby.

Burial for the second wife Martha age 57 10.3.1809 Can't see a burial for the first I'm afraid.

There seems to be William and Ann Nickols there in the 1740's and Jeremiah and Mary 1760-s onwards besides John and his wives I'd be looking for a connection to them.Jeremiah and John being older sons baptised elsewhere.

There is a ELIZABETH Baptised 17 July 1771 same Church, Father JOHN, Mother is listed as John also, likely a mistake.

MARTHA, Wife of John, was buried 10 March 1809 St Mary, age 57 . (birth c 1752)
