Get rid of XP quickly, update to W7
Just wondering why this advice?

XP is dead, no longer supported by Microsoft.
Internet Explorer up to ver8, later versions supposed to not be as 'buggy'.
[Side issue with Windows 7, Microsoft wants everyone to be on Windows 10 to which end Microsoft are uploading Windows 10 files to Windows 7 users to get them to change!]

Thank you. Though I use W7 and do have some issues but don't want to be forced. Drag me kicking and screaming

Ok. Internet Explorer is still version 7, as I have not used it for years. Because XP is no longer supported, I cannot update this.  Firefox now opens, but also has issues, although is up to date, as far as I can see. Some pages won't load.
Searching around my computer, I found that Chrome updated yesterday morning and must have brought a bug with it, because it hasn't loaded since. I uninstalled and reinstalled (via Firefox) but of course, it brings the updated version, so the problem remains. WhenI right click the desktop icon for chrome I don't get a troubleshoot option. Don't know why. I am replying here on my small tablet which also has limitations.  I think it may be time for a new pc. Sigh!

Why not set Firefox as Default?? See if that works....

What do you get when you right click the Chrome Icon on desktop???  Do you get "Properties"?

Chrome is my default, but I have tried other browsers.   I will give that a go through.

Chrome might be the Default... but is is SET to Default with ALL it's defaults and not just some??

You need to set it to ALL it's defaults!! Otherwise it has some Firefox properties as default, some IE etc and so won't work properly!!

This sounds similar to the problem that I had a couple of weeks ago.  It came out of the blue, for no apparent reason as I'd done nothing different as far as I was aware.  I have Win.8.1 and use  Firefox.

I had lots of help, all of which I tried, but sadly no luck, & I'm not technical enough to sort it myself.   I was bb connected according to the system but kept getting the message that my bb was not connected.  Here's the link to the other thread:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=735511.0

In the end I had to take the laptop in for repair;  got it back last week, but it still seems a bit 'iffy'.  Apparently the issue was something to do with a "browser problem" - I could only talk to the receptionist as the repair chap was off sick, so I still don't know exactly what that means.

With Chrome downloading itself whether you want it or not it 'pulls' some defaults from Firefox or whatever so one has to check that Firefox has ALL it's defaults, which is what I was doing....

After weeks of using Firefox as my default and getting very annoyed with it as certain functions didn't work, I finally sat down and googled Chrome problems.  I found a troubleshooting page that said that whatever the problem - it wouldn't be much!

The first thing it suggested was that I uninstall all traces of Chrome and reinstall.  I had already tried that, but hey!  I tried again.  Still no joy.  Then it told me to disable extensions.  I only had three extensions -  one was an advert blocking one and two google extensions.  I disabled them!  Hey presto!!  It worked again.  So I had gone all those weeks getting more and more annoyed, when all it was, was extensions.  So!!! Lesson learned happily!
