1740 London Custom House Officer
« on: Thursday 03 December 15 17:36 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon,

I'm looking for some help/advice on where to look to find my 7th great grandfather's employment records. Upon his marriage in 1740 in St Mary White Chapel, Middlesex England  he is listed as a "Custom House Officer". I'm having a hard time locating any specific records regarding what a "Custom House Officer" is (or did in 1740s) or if there are any records such as pay, transfers, etc.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?
His info:
Charles Howell born 1695 in Stafford, England. Shows up in 1740 in Middlesex England as "Custom House Officer" and then by 1755 as a "gentlemen"  still in St Mary White Chapel

Thank you
