living relatives
« on: Saturday 05 December 15 23:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am trying to trace my wife's family to find out if she has any half brothers or sisters or any other living family.
Her father divorced her mum in Scotland when she was very young, he then returned south of the border but she has had no contact with him or his family, now 40 years have passed.
I managed to get a copy of his birth certificate from Cardiff, and I know he had a sister and her name but that's as far as I can get. I don't know if he ever remarried or had any more children, is there anyway to find this out from his birth certificate. Any help and advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you.

Do you mean death certificate? If you could find that it might give you a clue if a relative registered the death - was it an unusual name and do you think he may have died?

The best way forward might be through his sister and her family. However, Rootschat has a no living persons policy, so if she is still alive I'm afraid you can't mention her name here.

Welcome to rootschat.

There are some birth death and marriage indexes online, some via pay sites. It depends on dates of events, whereabouts the events occurred as coverage varies, or if dates of coverage are limited.

You might get lucky and find some family here:
https://familysearch.org/search/
Or here:
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

After you have made three posts, anyone willing to try to help you via the personal messaging system can do so, so post a couple more times.

There is also GenesReunited, which I believe some people have had successs with.

Good luck.

You can look for later marriages and then from those work out if there were any children. But you are dealing with unknowns ( did her marry at all ?  did he emigrate ? etc. )  how easy that is can really depend on how common her father's name is. He may have had children without marrying.

The  best way to do it is to trace known relatives forward .... starting with his birth certificate you put together a full family tree for him, identifying any brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles he had and then look for them and their descendants. You only need to find one living relative who is able to give you the contact information you need.

Thanks for the quick responses.
I will take all advice on board.
Her fathers name is not very common. I'm unsure if I can search other births with his name as the father or how to search if he remarried.

Found our some details with help from ppl here. My wife's aunt now lives in Australia,  she tried messaging her on Facebook but no reply yet. Still trying to find out more about her dad and if she has any brothers or sisters.
