As this is my first post I would like to say hello to everyone from Australia :). Although we all have blocks in the information we are able to find, I am unable it seems, to go back or find the relevant information on the following. All I have is this.

Robert Allan married Elizabeth Thompson February 7, 1764, in East Lothian, Scotland . No Birth of death dates for either. Their children only birth dates Elizabeth Allan 1766, Robert Allan 1767, James Allan 1770 my direct line, Margaret 1772, Janet 1780, Mary Allan 1782 and Thomas 1785. All the children were born in  Leith, Midlothian, Scotland (2 miles north of Edinburgh) James Allan born 13th April 1770 my direct line married a Margaret Kelso born aprox 1775. I cannot find a marriage certificate or any information on Margaret, no matter how hard I have tried.

Looking back on the research through Scotlands People going way back to Robert Allan and Elizabeth Thompson one particular witness to each birth was a George Thompson and John Paterson.

If anyone can help it would be so appreciative.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat. Have you used Scotland's People in your research?
This thread might fare better on the Scotland board, if a kind moderator will move it.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

As with Robert Allan and Elizabeth Thomson, is it possible that a marriage place is recorded in two different locations, if they are so close to each other. I have now found a second marriage for both Robert and Elizabeth on exactly the same names and dates and a short distance from each other.
Example :
Robert Allan, Elizabeth Thomson : 7th February 1764 Berwick East Lothian
Robert Allan, Elizabeth Thomson : 7th February 1764  Dirleton East Lothian Scotland.

As I do not have the birth date or deaths only the children born, how can I research further if they are different people and in short distances from each other, to ensure I have the correct couple ?

Mark

It is likely it is the same couple, given the same date. The two entries are likely to be in the parishes of each person; sometimes people had a short ceremony in the second parish, although not often on the same day. Perhaps one of them is simply an announcement of the marriage? Have you viewed the original entries?

Thank you, this may now answer another situation with a later James Allan 1870 and his spouse Janet Fife 1817 as there are two exact names for marriages, but in different counties. Thank you always for your help  :D
