Magraths and McCleans in C19 Lucan
« on: Tuesday 08 December 15 13:21 GMT (UK) »
I have a William Christopher Magrath 1800-1873 who married a Susannah McClean in 1831.  Her father was Christopher William McClean, Smith in Lucan.  She had a brother Christopher who may also have become a Smith. There is a Lucan listing for a blacksmith of this name for 1851.  All 3 had the vote via Ancient Freedom of Dublin.
After that I am rather stuck for information.  I read in a Lucan Newsletter that the population of early C19 Lucan was around 600.  Surely (goes my desperate reasoning) I should be able to find out much more about these families given the small population of Lucan.
1. Is anyone able to advise what resources are available for Lucan around these dates?
2. Was Lucan always part of Kildare?
Many thanks

You are talking about the period pre-registration in Ireland were you have no vital records (births, marriages, deaths) and no surviving census records.

The most likely place to now search is probably church records. What religion were they? If Catholic then the Parish registers are now online and may cover the period-

There are also Will Extracts online-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you. Do you know where the Lucan church records are?
They seem to have been COI and Conservative Registration Assoc supporters (got this last from the press).
I wonder if there were Trade Journals or Street Directories for Lucan etc. I guess a map too might pinpoint any Lucan Smithies?

You could try Mary Mulhall a local Lucan Historian. I am assuming you are referring to Lucan, Co Dublin, a small village - no longer so very small!) that borders Kildare. A very beautiful village, my Mother was from Lucan. You can contact Mary through Lucan Newsletter (just google it and you'll get an address - if you have bother get back to me and I'll get you proper address), it's a small local newsletter published, I think, weekly. They also may be able to help you with a photograph.
Good Luck!
