Wanless Family
« on: Wednesday 09 December 15 05:06 GMT (UK) »
I have a problem with the Wanless family arrival in Australia.
I have father John,49, mother Sarah, 41, children Mary, 18, Sarah, 12, Emily, 10, John, 9, Thomas 8 and Florence 5.

They arrived on the Northampton on either 12 Jan 1879 or 7 Nov 1881 as according to New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896, and
Persons on bounty ships to Sydney, Newcastle, and Moreton Bay (Board's Immigrant Lists); Series: 5317; Reel: 2492

In 1879, the whole family is listed together, but Mary and Sarah are included subsequently into the family group.

In 1881 Mary and Sarah are listed separately, at the end of the passenger list.

Name: John Wanless
Birth Year: abt 1832
Age: 47
Arrival Date: 12 Jan 1879
Vessel Name: Northampton

Name: Sarah Wanless
Birth Year: abt 1869
Age:12
Gender: Female
Arrival Date: 7 Nov 1881
Vessel Name: Northampton

I have not located any British incoming passenger lists with the family on them, and as a result, am wondering which is correct.

Is there anyone out there who could point me in the right direction as to which one is correct?

This looks like a birth to the couple.

6800/1881  WANLESS Edward S
Parents  John & Sarah
At PADDINGTON

It was registered in the first fortnight of February 1881

Sue, Thank you very much for that.

I simply could not find much information about them, after probably trying too hard ::) ::)

Was John connected with steam boats before immigration?

In this 1879 article, a man of the name is a witness in an inquiry into a steamboat accident.
A waterman is his occupation.

A look at the original record and yes, John was a waterman.

I also note on the record showing vessel  Northampton headed as arriving 1881, I do note a  death on the page which is recorded as occurring on 9th November 1878 :P ???

Thank you both for that information.

Sue, in both the 1861 and the 1871 census, John is listed as a waterman. It was the lack of the 1881 census that I started looking further. I will follow the information on Trove further, where posible, and also the Sands information.

JM Thank you very much for those links. I am very grateful to all the Rootschatters for their help and interest in other peoples queries

Hi
As you had not known about the birth of Edward WANLESS to John and Sarah in 1881, I wondered whether you might like to see his marriage and a child.

11677/1909 WANLESS Edward S
STAPLETON Sarah C
At MARRICKVILLE

35209/1910 WANLESS Robert E
Parents Edward S & Sarah C
At ANNANDALE

Edward died.
31346/1959 WANLESS Edward Swinburn
Parents  John & Sarah
at GOSFORD

John WANLESS death-

9110/1890 WANLESS   John
Parents Edward & Sarah
At NEWTOWN

It is interesting to note he drowned in a boating accident in 1890
The initial for his name as I see it, appears  to be H. (I cannot see the entire text of the article today), but it would be an newspaper error. Should be J.
