Medal query..
« on: Friday 15 July 05 16:41 BST (UK) »
I almost daren't ask....

today I downloaded a war medal (WWI) from National Archives.

From his marriage certificate in 1920 - I have

Kenneth Appleton (23) occupation -  Gunner 134194 (or 124194)
                                                    Royal Garrison Artillery
                                                    (Electrical Engineer)

I had the idea of looking on the war medals index cards...

I think this is him :

APPLETON   Walter    R.G.A.   Gnr.  19419 (incomplete)

It seems he was awarded the Victory medal & British medal

after each it says  roll - RGA/250B  page 15098

then in the Remarks box :  what looks like

P.O.W. of ..???  M Retd. (forfeited)C.R.?.
                  / 23.8.??     ?.w./9/3161

then at the very bottom                   N?.W. /9/3161   again

there is noting else - no 'theatre of war, or anything......

can anyone explain this ??

Thank you......that is much easier !

I was thinking - maybe he had just joined the army as the war ended - and wasn't posted overseas......if he wasn't 'in action' would he still be entitled to his medal ?

Maybe the POW...is numbers....8 0.....
