Where to start?
« on: Wednesday 16 December 15 12:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,
It seems that, at last I may have found somewhere to help me in my search for my estranged father. My problem starts with the fact that all I have is a name and the company he worked for (which has now closed down) I am 37 now and all this happened 35-36 years ago. My maternal family are unwilling to help me with information. Where do I start? Where do I go for help?

Thanks all.

Greg.

Hi Greg

WELCOME TO ROOTSCHAT!
A Rootschat rule is that we cannot post details of possibly living people.
However . . . . . .

A question or 2 before we start.

What do you know about him
How do you know he worked for a specific company
Have you posted queries anywhere else?
Geography?

If you want to post again (2x) (you only need to say hello) then Rootschatters will be able to contact you via the messaging system (pm), IF NECESSARY.

Do not forget to tell people information shared that way . . . . .

This will ALL definitely save duplication of effort by Rootschatters NOT having to repeat research where you already have the detail.

"The wise man knows how little he knows, the foolish man does not". My Grandfather & Father.

"You can’t give kindness away.  It keeps coming back". Mark Twain (?).

Hello Ray,
I discovered where he worked after a conversation with a family member I've not seen for a number of years. My immediate family had mislead me for a number of years so I spent time looking in the wrong places. The information I have now is all I am able to get and am at a total loss as to where to go next. The world seems a big place when you have a small amount of information to go on.

So, Greg

You have his name.
Do you know roughly how old he was/now is?

You could look to see if you can find his birth reference on www.freebmd.org.uk
Were your parents ever married?  If so, you could look for their marriage on the same site.
Do you have your birth certificate, and is he named on that?

Once you have more details about him, you can then try to see if he married after he and your mum split up, and if so if there were other children, and then you will have more names to look for on social media, 192.com and so on.

Do look at the link that Sarah posted yesterday, if you've not yet done so.
