Ah yes, how did I miss it   ???

GRO
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
You'll need to register first, then go to online ordering. You know the reference so only need to give their names, year, quarter (Dec 1917), district, reference. Usually takes about a week, maybe a bit longer at the moment.

The censuses have him as a Carpenter- if that is him.
However, he may have enhanced his job for the censuses or became a labourer later.

Do you know of any other siblings?

Pending confirmation on Margaret's father, just to note that various birth / baptism records indicate that the couple in the 1901 Ireland census return posted at reply #3 above are James Tallon and Mary Connolly, who got married on 27th May 1883:

Should this James turn out to be the right one (ie. your Margaret's father), here are other details in order to purchase a 4 research copy of the marriage from Roscommon:

James Tallon: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FY7P-83T
Mary Connolly: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FY75-4PB

I do have their marriage cert and under profession of father it says Army Pensioner, I do not know how I can prove or disprove he is my Nan's father, but the last three names are of the three sisters

I do have their marriage cert
Is this the 1917 one? Woo are the witnesses?

I have looked for a military record for James Tall*n; found the enlistment  for 6 years in 1895 of a James Tallon aged 33 carpenter born Belturbet Co Cavan married with 4 children to the 4th battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers having previously served in the Leinster Regiment. So this man would have been discharged by the 1901 census & an army pensioner. Then he was discharged to the militia [where he was a sergeant] in Feb 1901. He also had a 'sallow' complexion   :D & had a scar on the back of his head.

ADDED: then discharged from the militia as medically unfit in 1916.

Pretty likely that this James Tallon is your man. Carpenter born Cavan, then army pensioner, discharged by 1901 census, 4 children in 1895 [Lizzie 6 in 1901 census so probably born late 1895 after enlistment].

I think the next best step is to get from Roscommon the 1883 marriage certificate of James Tallon & Mary Connolly found by gaffy in reply #12.
https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx
Get a 4 research copy.

James Tallon's ca 1862 Co Cavan birth does not appear on the GRO Ireland index on familysearch or ancestry - only his marriage, perhaps his birth was not registered? His baptism may be on rootsireland.ie the subscription site. I think you can get a 1 month subs, so it's worth saving up some queries & doing the searches during a short subscription. Once you know his father's name from his marriage certificate it will be easier to confirm a baptism - also Mary's as you can search with father's name within a county.
