Hi,

Court and Convict records don't normally have place of birth but I can have a look at the court records next time I'm in Nottingham archives in January.

Do you know who he married as there might be clues on there.

What I would do now is post on  asking if anyone can find his baptism.

( refer to this thread )

Now his date  of birth.

It says 44 years old in 1810 and 66 years old in 1827 so slight difference.

Problem is he may not have been born in Nottinghamshire.

Thankyou very much majm and jaywit, much appreciated. There are online trees where they have him born in Leics about 1761 - 1764 yet christened in 1757 , quite miraculous ha ha !

Please may I ask for some more help with this but from another angle ? That is to find any information that John Marsden baptised 1757 in Queniborough Leics to Edward and Dorothy stayed in Leics ? This family begins as Marsden but marriages are Marston. I'll be very grateful for any help with this and need fresh eyes to see whether I'm correct in thinking that these Johns are different people.                kindest regards, Sue.

I can see the marriage of John Marsden to Jane Wessley at St Mary's, Nottingham, on 18.8.1799. Is this your man? The CD doesn't give any further info but perhaps someone is going to the archives and could see who the witnesses were?

There are 5 childrens' baptisms listed for this couple if you want them (including one in April 1811, ie after the deportation!).

There are no baptisms listed for a John Mars* anywhere in Notts between 1760 - 1766 (going on the putative ages given above).

The newspaper report from 18 Aug 1810 states that John Marsden was convicted with William Reid for sheep-stealing; both were sentenced to death but reprieved. No further details given.
