I'll get the childrens' details and post them when I'm on the other computer as this one doesn't hold those files (probably tomorrow). But I did look for a baptism for Jane Wessley and couldn't see her either.

Do you know where she came from? Maybe that would help - if perhaps they had moved to Notts together, or her family and John's knew each other from before?

Mine is not the most up to date version of the FHS CDs so the lack of a baptism doesn't guarantee that it didn't happen, but I think my version is pretty up to date for the latter half of the 1700s on.

Thankyou Annie I don't know where she came from but sites say Nottingham . I have not yet seen any proof on these sites as to John's origins, some say Notts and others Queniborough. The numbers don't add up for me though for Queniborough. That's why I wondered if there is a marriage or something there.                     Thankyou for your help Annie, kind regards, Sue

Children's details as promised! All baptisms at St Mary in Nottingham, parents John and Jane.

   1800 06 01      Jane
   1802 08 03      John
   1805 02 06      Thomas
   1807 01 27      Mary Ann
   1811 04 17      Benjamin

Burials of possible interest at St Mary's (though may be from other families)

1804 08 16   John   MARSDEN         Son of John
1805 02 21   John   MARSTON         Son of John
1807 12 06   Mary   MARSDEN         Dau of John
1812 04 07   Benjamin   MARSDEN      Son of John

It's noteworthy that a link given earlier in the thread states that John's children (with the exception of Mary Ann) all went to Australia as well, with son John also travelling as a convict, and this is backed up on the page by copies of newspaper reports naming John snr and jnr.

Having said that, I can't see another John Marsden/ton having children in the St Mary area in the first decade of the 1800s ---

I have found a little more information , Jane was left behind and John's first wife was Mary Ann Potter they married in 1777. Also some of his children's names do not occur in the family at Queniborough but do in the family of a John Marsden born 1767 in Coleorton Leics. I think he died in Leics but a possible connection?

Hi,

Court and Convict records don't normally have place of birth but I can have a look at the court records next time I'm in Nottingham archives in January

NG

Hi,

Have been to Nottingham Archives but they don't have the assizes for 1810 it seems they are at the National Archives in Kew, London but are on Ancestry site under the England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892, put his name in the search boxes with the year and Nottingham in the event boxes leaving all the other boxes empty and he comes up at top of the results list but you do need a subscription to see the record and image.

Sorry I couldn't be more help to you.

Hi a-l,

I'll try and get it for you next week when I'm in the archives as they have free access to ancestry and I didn't know it was on there until tonight when I looked as the National Archives web site.
