His birth certificate will give the exact date and place of birth as well as mother's details. If he was illegitimate his father is unlikely to be listed (unless he attended the registration with the baby's mother).

Added- GRONI lists only one 1914 John Mooney birth in Ballymoney registration district- born 20 June 1914 and he's probably illegitimate since mother's maiden name doesn't appear in the index.

So far I haven't managed to find a family member who knows if his father was named on his birth certificate ,its starting to look like maybe he wasn't I'm hoping one of my mother's sisters still has the original birth certificate otherwise I think we may have to visit the records office in Belfast.

If you click on the link I posted for GRONI, register then purchase a few credits (if you haven't done so already), then you will be able to view the certificate online immediately.

Ballymoney is the registration district but the birth could have taken place anywhere in that area.

Took a look at the 1911 census and the only likely match for an Alice Mooney is this one, a servant at Lisnick-

Just posting this in case Alice Jane Mooney does turn out to be John's mother-

Seacon School register- Alice Jane Mooney, age 5 in July 1895 when she started school, residence- 'Millknowe' (from a transcription so not sure if this is correct but it's not a place name I recognise), father's occupation weaver (this may be the occupation of her grandfather)

William Mooney, Tullaghgore wounded in WWI-

The family would have attended St. James' Presbyterian Church, Ballymoney. Can't find a gravestone there or in Ballymoney Cemetery but it's possible they didn't put up a gravestone.
