What was in the letter?

I'm researching my great aunts husband and have come across something I have never seen before and wonder if anyone can help me?

I have found his British Army Pension Record but he only served 11 days! On the topo right corner of the short service attestation it appears to say "Cancelled see letter enclosed ex Chief of Police Hull". (Sadly the letter isn't in the record)

I wondered what the letter would have needed to say to cancel his military service?

The man concerned was James Edward Hill born 15 Jan 1891 in Hull to James Edmund and Rosamund (nee Harrison). James senior was a policeman and police pensioner in the 1901 and 1911 census.

James joined up on 9th Nov 1914 and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery until 19 November 1914.

Any help or suggestions where to look gratefully received!

Father James may have still had personal connection with the Chief of Police and he, or mum, not wanting his son to join up (all were volunteers at that time) asked his friend to intercede, mother needs him at home or such like.
Or perhaps he had told fibs in replying to some of the questions and he was found out?
I have come across a similar cancellation with an under age chap but that does not seem to apply here.

What was James junior's occupation, was he also in the police?

He appears in the "Silver War Badge" roll as discharged under "Medical Grounds" (It's shown on page 3 of his Attestation Papers under Section 4. Awards and Decorations).

From this we can surmise that he was either medically unfit or the Police Chief pulled some strings?

Without the letter we'll never know! You could always try the East Riding Archives or Hull History Centre to see if they hold any records relating to the Chief of Police at that time and his private papers?
