Ann Gardner b 1781? Hampshire?
« on: Monday 21 December 15 03:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My great great great grandfather is George Gardner b 1808 in Hampshire I think. His mother seems to be Ann Gardner born 1781? to John and Mary Gardner and she had siblings Elizabeth, Mary, john and Thomas. Ann may have married a James Meachem in 1808 in Hampshire.

George appears to have been illegitimate and presumably adopted by somebody, or maybe brought up out of wedlock. He married Harriett Norris on 27 November 1830 in Selborne, Hampshire and they had 7 children (Mary, Eliza, Harriett, George, William, James and Andrew). All of these children were born in Hampshire. They emigrated to Australia in 1849 and George senior died on the ship. The boys in the family subsequently moved to New Zealand in the 1850's/60's.

I am interested in tracing Ann's identity and family history, and also George's correct parents (father as well as Ann if she is his mother), siblings etc.

If anyone can suggest how I might trace these matters I would appreciate it.

Hi billyg54

Welcome to rootschat  :)

I presume that this is George and family in Headley, Hampshire in 1841
H0107/382 f9 p12

All born in Hampshire
George Gardner 30
Harriet 30
Mary 10
Harriet 5
George 2
William (1?)

Where do you get the information that Georges mother was Ann.
Do you know who the witnesses were to the wedding of George & Harriet.

Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

A George Gardner was baptised in Headley 7 Aug 1808, described as baseborn and his mother was Anne.

Given George is found with his family in Headley in 1841, it seems plausible that he was also born in the parish or close by.

I'm less sure about the identification of Anne's possible birth place since Bishop's Waltham is a bit of a hoof down the Portsmouth Road from Headley.  Does her possible birth date come from her age at death?

The marriage of Anne Gardner & James Meachem took place in Preston Candover, which is still a fair way from Bishop's Waltham and from Headley.  The original marriage record might help determine where Anne was from.  But equally it might be frustratingly unhelpful.   :(

Hello Rosie, Nell and Trish,

Thank you very much for your postings, they look very helpful.

I will analyse the info over the Christmas break and compare/assemble the info I have and its sources. Then I will try and conclude where it takes me and do another post summarising it and to see if you can provide any more help.

At this point it looks as I though I am still looking for who George's father was if indeed Ann Gardner (Meachem) is his mother.

Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Cheers
Bill Gardner

Hello here I am again 7 years later and still trying to track down Ann and George. The gap has been caused by many other life events getting in the way.

I am keen to know where Little Nell saw the baptism entry for a George Gardner in Headley 1808? I haven't been able to turn that entry up anywhere I've looked.

Cheers

Thanks very much Neale. That should help me track down Ann/e his mother who also seems to be from the Headley area.

Cheers

How do you know that your George's mother was Ann? Where do you find this in records?
Have you considered other baptisms for George?
