"missing" Chaddleworth records
« on: Tuesday 22 December 15 12:02 GMT (UK) »
FindMyPast has some familysearch transcripts from the record set "England Deaths and Burials 1538-1991", attributed to BRK but no parish given.  Familysearch film number 1279453.  I've identified a 1723 burial of Thomas, son of Joseph DARLING & Mary as being probably Chaddleworth.  The record isn't on the BRK Burial Index V11 cd (which is very "light" on Chaddleworth burials for that decade) or the NBI as far as I can tell.  Very likely the Familysearch film is a mixed reel - it has more than 36000 records on it and many do give a parish.  I've not physically viewed it.  But if you're looking for a Chaddleworth burial and can't find it anywhere else, this is possibly worth a look.

I'll also email BFHS as they may want to investigate this for the next edition of the BBI.

Happy Christmas to you all

Jane :-)

Jane,

As far as I know, the Berkshire Burial Index is the master record of any Berkshire records on the NBI.   I am fairly sure, that BFHS have stopped producing updates of the BBI - I worked on the transcription project until it's closure.   I'm no longer a member, so there may be more recent news.

The BBI included burials from parish registers and bishop's transcripts, if they have finished Chaddleworth then I would be astounded if there were any more burials to be found.

Familysearch films include some fairly dodgy genealogical flights of fancy - a burial located no more closely than 'Berkshire' sounds like one of these.  I would, therefore, treat the entire film with suspicion until I had seen it!

I live locally to WSRO, in the New Year I'll check out the Chaddleworth BTs, if this record proves to be there then it suggests that the BBI perhaps only includes Chaddleworth records transcribed from PRs and not from BTs as well.  I'll note the few already on the BBI for this year and make a comparison, if it seems more than just this one is missing, and it's not too difficult to read, I'll transcribe the year and post it here.  I'll also try to get in touch with BFHS again, perhaps emailing direct rather than using their "contact us" form.

Have a good Xmas everyone.

best wishes
Jane :-)

I've transcribed a few years worth of Chaddleworth BTs and uploaded the data to FreeReg.  Note it's not a complete "run", I just started at 1720 and stopped when I'd had enough for the day.  A couple of years were out of order (the BTs aren't bound) so I missed them, they're probably there somewhere, perhaps another day...

Years

1728 up to March 1728/9

Hi Jane,

Your contribution is most valuable - thank you.

I did notice that some of the surnames are not on my copy of the Berks Bur. Index CD (10th edition) for Chaddleworth;  ie, Darlin, Feroud (this is a variant of Froud(e) etc. I hadn't thought of in the past). So this gives me something else to look for in future.

I haven't gone thru the entire list of yours because only a small selection of names appear  in my tree
but its very welcome.

Thank you.
