Robert Henry HUGHES
« on: Wednesday 23 December 15 18:59 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a Robert Henry Hughes born around 1888 He married a  Hilda Herbert Born1890  in York. They married in 1910 in Belpher, derbyshire.   There is no father on his marriage cert so I looked on the 1911 census to find out where he came from Hilda is on it but living with her family in York stating she was married, but still down as Hilda Herbert. Cannot find a Robert Henry Hughes as I dont know his birthplace. He was 22yrs old in 1910 and a miner by trade. any suggestion would be much appreciated

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?  They might help - especially if they were called Hughes.

Have to say he sounds Welsh but just generalising.  Do you know if they had any children?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

the witnesses on the marriage cert is  a S Herbert, I could not find any of the Herbert family beginning with an "S"  They had 3 known children Gertrude Gwendowline b1913 and Philip J b1921, on this birth cert he says his father no first name was an army pensioner, formerly a steel erector . so the gap between the children could have been when he was in France WW1, but no records for him in the military. The last child was a Arthur b1923, but I do not have his birth cert. I think Robert H must have died between 1923 & 1933, as Hilda re-married a Rbt Pearcey in York and died in 1975. The other witness was a Ada Severn

I have looked at the Robert Hughes on the 1911 census you referred to as he was the only Robert born around 1888/9 that was stated as married, but there was no "H" on the census, and I cannot find a birth for him on BMD

thanks milliepede I had looked at that record, and the birth place was Iregele Monmouth,  There is no such place!!, so I guess it had been transcribed wrong.  witnesses were S. Herbert found him, nephew of Hilda I think, who`s father is the brother of Hilda`s father  who went to live in Alfreton, when he was 18yrs old . and an  Ada Severn, must  have been a friend she is on the 1911 census, also living in Alfreton/ so I still don't know where Robert was born!!

Looking at that 1911 census, the POB looks like Trefela to me.

That still doesn't match up with a recognisable place name but Tre- is a v comon prefix to Welsh place names (Tref =Town in Welsh) so hopefully that will help you narrow it down a little.
