mother of william ward born 1836
« on: Monday 28 December 15 18:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am asking for some help, if someone could find the mother of one of my relatives from crawley, oxfordshire England, names William ward.  .  He is listed as born there in 1836.  He is on the 1851 census as a grandson of my 3rd grt grandfather Daniel and his wife sussana ward.  They were living in crawley, oxon.   I can find his birthdate on ancestry.co.uk, but it does not say the mothers name.  I am suspect it could have been the daughter of Daniel and sussana named Dorcas.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.  thank you!

Hello, that's what I was thinking, but I cannot document that for sure.  She was 25, might have had him out of wedlock, and in 1841 she marries a man named John Roberts, and they had children, but no William was ever listed.  thank you

In the later censuses he is married to Rachel

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKXS-B5LR
1891
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:4G7W-4MM
so if you get this certificate you will see who he names as his father:
Marriages Sep 1858
Ward    William        Witney    3a   957
Weaver    Rachel        Witney    3a   957

ADDED: 1841
HO107; Piece: 872; Folio: 6; Page: 7
Daniel Ward 54 shoemaker
Susannah Ward 54
Dorcas Ward 25
William Ward 5

I suggest William's mother is an unmarried Dorcas......[she married John Roberts in 1841 Q4 Witney Oct-Nov-Dec Volume   16 Page   292].

I wonder if he was the son of Dorcas age 25 years...if I have the right census in 1841. The only matching trees on Ancestry don't name his parents either  ::)

Just before civil registration - how annoying. A baptism needs to be found if one exists.

Are there accessible bastardy bonds for Oxfordshire?

Ah yes,

Ancestry have the contract for putting Oxfordshire's parish registers online.  They've had the scans from Oxfordshire Family History Society for many months, but refuse to discuss timescales.  Some of us might not live that long ::)

In the meantime, anyone who has the OFHS transcripts on CD for Hailey (including Crawley) might see your post - I'm sorry it's not in my collection.  Alternatively the OFHS website has a search service where they'll check their baptism index for a modest charge of £1.50 per name.

Good luck :)

Oxfordshire Family History Society has transcribed the Oxfordshire registers.  Hailey and Crawley are on the CD WIT01.  See CDs at www.ofhs.org.uk
