Griffith's Valuation
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 16:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

My ancestor John Freeman has 2 entries on the Griffith's Valuation for Co. Mayo I wonder if anyone had access to them so I could see what they are about. of course at least one of them will not belong to him but I'd be interested to check it out, see what kind of information is offered.

many thanks

There's no way to tell is it is, or isn't, the same John Freeman in Griffith's. You can see the actual printed page yourself-

After that date the details of properties were put into notebooks (Valuation Revision Books) which continue up until c1930- the ones for Mayo will be held in Dublin but here's a sample from Ulster one-

The two entries for John Freeman are both in the parish of Aghamore. One is in Derrycashel. It’s plot 2n and is a house and 375 acres of land shared in common with 14 other farmers. The second is in Falleighter and is plot 19a which is  a house and just under 24 acres of land.

The two farms are not too far apart but I’d think they were owned by two different men of the same name. Most farmers only needed one farmhouse and where they have land in more than one townland, they would sublet the spare farmhouse. (So they would be listed with land only in the one they didn’t reside) . That is not the case here. Both record a farmhouse occupied by the named lessor. Griffiths clerks also had instructions to note where a farmer lived in a different townland (though they did not always record that information.)

Looking at the 1901 census, I see a Freeman family in Derrycashel:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilkelly/Derrycashel/1595001/

and 2 in Falleighter:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Kilkelly/Falleighter/1595085/

So different families, I reckon. You could use the revaluation records (in the Valuation Office in Dublin) to find out when each of the properties changed occupant, after the initial valuation in 1856.
