I am planning a research project on Germans in Nottingham during World War One, and interested in any family stories and sources on these people.

The 1911 census shows more than 200 people who give their birthplace as Germany living in Nottingham city, so maybe if you look at that it will give you some idea of what sort of jobs they did and which parts of the city they lived in.
Cross Steeple Claydon Bucks,  Jennings Steeple Claydon Bucks,  Steel Byfield Northants,  Rogers Northants,  Wheeler Oxon,  Roberts Oxon,  Bonham Oxon/ Middleton Cheney Northants,  Maycock Northants,  Abbott Northants , Newman Northants, Buckingham Bucks, Hart Warks, Newth Gloucs.

Hi and welcome to rootschat  :)

Well at least you will have lots of sources to research for your project as many Universities have research information including Nottingham Uni http://hiddenhistorieswwi.ac.uk/uncategorized/2015/01/britain-germany-and-the-first-world-war-discussion-event/
https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/manuscriptsandspecialcollections/documents/exhibitions/librarydisplay/pows.pdf

The Nottingham post has done many stories and the National Archives also have lots of records
Leicestershire:Chamberlain, Dakin, Wilkinson, Moss, Cook, Welland, Dobson, Roper,Palfreman, Squires, Hames, Goddard, Topliss, Twells,Bacon.
Northamps:Sykes, Harris, Rice,Knowles.
Rutland:Clements, Dalby, Osbourne, Durance, Smith,Christian, Royce, Richardson,Oakham, Dewey,Newbold,Cox,Chamberlaine,Brow, Cooper, Bloodworth,Clarke

Thank you, Iluleah and Jaywit.

This is very helpful.

To give you a bit more information. I will be reviewing Nottingham in a wider UK context, looking at issues such as:
- Migrant numbers and ethnic coherence
- Participation in the wider society
- Prisoners of war
- Anti-German measures and attitudes
- Riots and disturbances
- German reactions and support

Within the context, I am also interested in stories on individuals, families and companies with German connections.

I am an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow, and a specialist on integration of immigrants in western European societies in the modern era, a subject on which I have published extensively, including books and articles such as “Within our Gates - A new perspective on Germans in Glasgow during the First World War” (Journal of Scottish Historical Studies), which had a similar subject as his Nottingham project.

In reaction to your replies: What is the best place in Nottingham to view the printed census reports such as the 1911 edition? Or are they online, and if so, where?

We have a group of people on RootsChat who have been researching their German Pork Butcher ancestors.
There are several topics about them, and I have gathered some of the links here:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=509347.0
The main topic is this one
Topic: German Pork Butchers in Britain
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,408853.0.html
In the course of these topics, the researchers have touched on most of the points you mention above.

I have also created a database for these researchers (see second reply in first link).
There are 21 entries for Germans who settled in Nottingham.

Another source - again, "in a wider UK context" - might be the
Topic: German Ancestors in the North of England
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,607068.0.html
Here, and in other topics, the Anglo-German Family History Society (AGFHS) is mentioned, which might be a useful source for you.

Another useful  "Germans in UK" site could be the Sugar bakers" site from Brian Mawer.
This was originally the "German sugar bikers" site, but seems to be now more general.
http://www.mawer.clara.net/intro.html.
Brian is also a RootsChat member ("sugarbakers").

regards,
Bob

I have not checked the occupations in 1911 but my guess would be that some of the immigrants  would be connected to the Lacemaking industry.

I would  contact Notts Archives, they are very helpful and see if they have anything useful to you.

You local library will have library addition to ancestry.com for free so you can go there and see the images of 1911 census

You could also check out what already is/has been researched on rootschat  put in "Germans in the UK ww1" n the search bar at the top of the page and it will bring up questions asked/answered  and once you have 3 posts your PM is open so you can contact individuals off the open forum directly

The University of Nottingham ( not Trent Uni) has an extensive research library which is where their research papers are, your own Uni may be able to get copies for you via inter Uni loan... as a side note Durham University and Leicester University also have extensive genealogy research  records as both of those have student who are working in the FH/genealogy research fields, both have contributed to scanning real records for  use for free online worldwide
