Annie Williams/Mackay Family
« on: Wednesday 30 December 15 23:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi I'm looking for information about my Gr Gr grandmother Annie Williams. She was born in 1863 in Wales(no idea what area!) She married James Mackay(born 1863 Scotland), I've searched for marriage certs on Scotlands People to no avail. On the 1911 census they had 2 children Amy (born 1893) and Ada Gordon (1905,Canongate Edinburgh). Any help with how to research in Wales would be great.
Thanks
Kathryn

Where were they living in 1911?

The 1911 image should tell you how many years they have been married.  It will also tell you how many living children were born to the marriage and how many are still alive

Can you provide that info please

The 1911 entry should also tell you exactly whereabouts in Wales & Scotland they were both born - have you viewed the actual 1911 image?

Were both children born Canongate or just Ada?

Where did you get Annie's maiden name from?

Hi Kathryn,

Any children born Scotland is your key.

A Scottish birth cert. will not only name both parents (with mother's m/s) but will also give date & place of marriage (if they were indeed married)

However, I just did a quick search on SP & there was both an Ada Gordon MacKay & Amy MacKay both born 1905  :-\

I haven't searched where yet but it's a strange coincidence.

I also note there is a big gap in both dates you give...Amy 1893 & Ada G 1905.

This makes me wonder if there were other births midway with kids who possibly didn't survive?

There is no birth for an Amy M(a)cKay 1891 - 1897 anywhere in Scotland  :-\

Amy b 1905 was not born in the "Lothians" area...neither Edinburgh City, East Lothian, Midlothian nor West Lothian.

Ada Gordon MacKay b 1905 was b Canongate, Edinburgh City so they were not twins!!

Can I ask where you got the name & date of 1893 for Amy please?

The middle name of Ada (Gordon) suggests James' mother's m/s may be Gordon....

Some Scottish births for a James MacKay with a window of 1860 - 1870

I checked out SP for the birth of Ada Gordon....

Parents marriage was London (can't make out the area)

Found the marriage of James & Annie (1 yr difference from birth cert. which isn't unusual)...

James Mackay (coachman, aged 26), son of David Mackay (coachman) married Annie Williams (housemaid, aged 27), daughter of John Williams (clerk) on 15 June 1890 at St Mary's Church, Marylebone, London.  Annie's residence is given as "parish of Ravenswood, Scotland" - James was living locally.

Is this them in the 1901 census address 3,Grassmarket Edinburgh
James McKay age 37 born Sprouston Roxburgh ( coachman )
Annie McKay age 38 b Auglis Minia Bridge
No mention of Amy b 1893
You might be better to get Annie's death certificate which will give you her parent's names which will help finding her in earlier census records
There is a tree online for the daughter Ada Gordon Mackay but no information on the parents
