James Johnson
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 06:23 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the marriage of James Johnson, b.1845 Wellington, New Zealand to Caroline Unknown.
They had 3 daughters - Ellen Beatrice Johnson (whose additional surname on her marriage certificate was Bull??), b.1871, Lilian b.1877 and Alice b.1880. All 3 girls born in Wandsworth.
I can't find the family in 1891 but Ellen married Richard Lane in 1892 from 80 North St, Clapham, father James Johnson, gas fitter.
I can't positively identify a death for Caroline or James, and can't find Lilian and Alicce after 1881.
Can anyone help?

Many thanks for the information. I've now got to work out why the family dropped the surname Bull and went with Johnson of subsequent censuses!!

They are Johnson as newlyweds in 1871 as well - James's widowed father William Johnson (shoemaker, 61 b Hull) also with them.

RG10/710/46/7.

Address is 17 Stimpson's Cottages.  I see they were at 6 Stimpson's Cottages in 1881.

More about Lilian & Alice's baptisms on same day 28 Aug 1881 St Anne's Wandsworth; baptised same day Lilian said to be born 9 Nov 1877, Alice 28 April 1878  ??? must be 1879. Father James William Johnson now a lamplighter, mother Caroline and still at 6 Stimpson's Buildings. So occupation of father had changed between 1872 Ellen's baptism & 1881.

I found a newspaper report in 1878 that A William Bull had been threatened by a William Vaughan as William Bull, lamp manufacturer of 447 Strand - had previously been a witness against Vaughan in a Wandsworth Court. A name change may have been to escape further threats??. Edited as we  now know James was Johnson in 1878.

1851 census for Chatham, Kent:

William Johnson Head Mar 41 Chelsea Pensioner Yorkshire Hull

James do Son 7 Scholar New Zealand

1861 census for St Pancras:

Wm Johnson Head Mar 50 Chelsea Pensioner Yorksh. Hull
Maud do Wife Mar 30 Ireland
Jas do Son 17 Shoemaker New Zealand Wellington
So it was the William James Johnson Bull which were the additions to James' name between 1861 & 1871, not dumped after 1871..
