Suggestions needed
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 17:03 GMT (UK) »
Happy New Year one and all. Can anyone suggest how I can help my mum, who  is 93, discover what happened to her cousin who has not sent her a Christmas card for the second year running? Mum fears she may well have died and her family not have known about mum to let her know what happened. The cousin would also be well into her 90s - married name is fairly uncommon. Cousin lives in Dalbeattie and I have her name and address (William Street). Further information available should anyone have any bright ideas on how to settle this query.

Thanks in anticipation and apologies if this is an inappropriate use of this board.

Some newspaper obituaries are searchable at http://www.iannounce.co.uk/, it doesn't cover all areas but is completely up to date.

Assuming she has not passed away

Presumably a day out to visit is out of the question?

Try 1stlocate.co.uk or even 192.com if her name appears then she may be there, in which case you could write.

She may be living with her family (if there is any) or in a home.

Not sure how recent Scotland release information too.

However you could contact national records scotland

http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/registration/how-to-order-an-official-extract-from-the-registers

and see if they would do a search for a death in the last couple of years (if their records are that up to date). Of course it will on it give a definitive result if there is a death registered but its a start i guess
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Scottish obituaries for the last few years are often online (I found one the other night from 2013) so try googling surname + Dalbeattie, etc. to see if anything turns up. If not, then try writing a letter to 'occupant' at the last address you have asking it they have any information (years ago a self-address envelope would have helped get a response but now I suspect a mobile number would be even better).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

If you know where about they lived, perhaps putting a notice in the local paper, might help, at 90+ it may well be that she has passed away or perhaps gone into a residental/nursing home...  One of her relatives might just see the notice and make contact

I have an Aunt and Uncle who have not sent Christmas card for the last two years. I contacted my cousin who lives nearer to them than me. she reassured me that they were ok but getting frail. Sometimes what has been a yearly occurrence changes due to their needs and the support around them. They have two sons who never send cards out. Do you have any family members who live closer that may be able to visit? The other option is contacting the Salvation Army in her area and asking them if they could knock on the door on your behalf to see if everything is ok.

Nick send me a PM with the info on and I'll see if I can help.

Bear in mind that if she is in her 90's,she may find writing too difficult to do now.
My dad's cousin is 92 and whilst she loves getting a card and pics of my family she is too frail to send one back.

Regards

Carol
