West Hartlepool address 1939 - Owton Manor Lane
« on: Monday 04 January 16 00:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi All, and a happy new year.

The 1939 Register has confirmed that my Great Uncle lived in Hartlepool (said to be " a new bungalow in Seaton Carew just behind the sea front" according to my Mother).

The 1939 entries raise more questions, but the first is to try and locate where he lived. The sequence of addresses give house names and no numbers so if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

The previous entries are in Brierton Lane, house names Hart View, Brierley Hill, and Highfield. The next are for Owton Manor Lane (he is in the first) house names, Wynsted, Chellson, Egglestone, Jo. Fran, Bream-ville, Lauriston and Clar-Innis.

The index transcriptions are not reliable so names might be incorrect but if anyone can point me in the right direction would be great.

Colin

Owton Manor Lane on a Hartlepool Site. It does not look very near the sea.

There is a 1939 map of Owton Manor Lane at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/450243/529513/12/101200 you will have to zoom out, unless you have a subscription.

If you go to http://www.durhamrecordoffice.org.uk/Pages/AdvancedSearchMapSeries.aspx?layer=2 and enter the Post Code TS25 3AB you can see the modern map of the Lane

1939 electoral roll books are available but owton manor lane and brierton lane may(?) have been in another constituency as the boundary was the traveller's rest in stockton road, west hartlepool

Many thanks for the links and suggestions.

I had previously seen the lane on Google Streetview and got the impression that the whole lane had been redeveloped to provide new housing, possibly in the 50's/60's. The link provided by Barryd tends to back this up, and yes, I agree it was not close to the sea-front, or even in Seaton Carew, but knowing my mother's knowledge of places, or lack of it, it makes sense by turning left off the main road, ie Stockton Road and not Seaton Lane (which leads to the sea).

Stan, thanks for the old map link which, I think, appears to show different housing arrangements to the current one.

Hpool, thanks for the tip. I have emailed Stockton Library to try and find out which Electoral District it fell in.

Regards,
Colin

I've received a very quick reply from Stockton Reference Library who told me that Owton Manor Lane came under West Hartlepool in 1939 and the Registers are held in Hartlepool.

Colin

colin

the "private" residences of owton manor lane were built way before those further up the lane as council houses in early 1950's and the "private" residences do not appear in the 1939 and 1945 electoral roll books. as mentioned try durham records office.

-----
by the way, the c1939 new build estate, called seaton lane estate in west hartlepool, came under easington village, county durham, for voting purposes.

Thanks Hpool,

I've added it to my list for when I'm next at Durham.

Again, thanks to all,
Colin
