Robert William Lay 1811-1868 Born Middlesex died Sunderland
« on: Wednesday 06 January 16 02:16 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for Robert William's father my 4 th great grandfather.  Not helpful that there are lots of Robert Lays.

I found one man who seem like he may be it "Robert lay" 1787 - 1853
the doubts i have are as follows

On ancestry lots of trees have the two related
However....
He has two sons called Robert both alive Robert William 1811 - 1868
and Robert Ridley Lay 1838 - 1908

On another tree it has the first wife Sarah Juniper 1791 - 1938 yet in Robert's subsequent marriage to Jane Ramsay North in 1815 he declares himself a widower.

A fresh pair of eyes would be ever so helpful

What details are given on Roberts marriage certificate for his father (name & occupation)? Whose were the witnesses at the marriage?

What records do you have that show Robert as having the middle name of William?

Is this the marriage  :-\

Robert Lay
Charlotte Hunter
30 March 1833

and Robert with Charlotte & children in 1851
Robert Lay age 40 occ Waterman & Victualler   born London, Middlesex
Charlotte   40 born Newcastle on Tyne
Ann   10
Robert 8
Thomas 5
George 4
William 2

I can't see a death for Robert 1811- 1868  :-\  Did he die at sea as I see he was a seaman in 1861

1841 says he is born Durham - 1861 Sunderland, Durham

There is an admittance and discharge record 3 May 1817 St George in the East for Robert Lay 34, Jane Lay 21, Robert Lay 7 and Mary Lay 5.

30 May 1833 - Marriage record for Robert Lay, Batchelor, OTP and Charlotte Hunter, spinster, OTP, by banns, witnesses Ann Hunter and George Lord.

Merchant marine records for a Robert Lay, 1810 born London.

Re looking for Robert's father.

So as I see it, if I order a marriage certificate for Robert William Lay (it should confirm if his middle name is William) born 4/10/1810 marrying Charlotte Hunter.  It should also disclose his fathers name and occupation and I should be able to compare that with his census 1851.  I couldn't find him in the 1941 census.  It shows his occupation as a farrier in 1951 census.

Only problem is that there are other Robert's and in particular one born in 1790 which also who was born in Tillingham, Essex but that is unsubstantiated.

There will not be a marriage certificate to order for the 1833 marriage to Charlotte Hunter, marriage registration did not start until 1837. The parish record transcripts are as I stated earlier, Robert and Charlotte are in Sunderland in 1841 with daughter Ann and as Rosie said earlier he was a seaman on that and 1861. I can see no records that show William as a middle name? I can find no baptism for himself, his children or possible sister Mary and still can't see his death in 1868?

1851
Robert Lay age 40 occ Waterman & Victualler   born London, Middlesex
Charlotte   40 born Newcastle on Tyne
Ann   10
Robert 8
Thomas 5
George 4
William 2

Could you please confirm that this is the family you are looking at, if not can you give details of them.  You mention in your last post that he was a farrier in 1851 so I am having doubts as to whether we are looking at the right family.

The reference is to a possible father Robert who was a Farrier and aged 64 in 1851.

There are two Robert LAYs - one who married Sarah JUNIPER, was an Ag. Lab. and lived in Tillingham and one who married Jane NORTH, was a Farrier and lived in London.  I am a bit mystified as to why anyone would think they are the same man.  Both had sons named Robert who seem to be easy enough to follow forward in Tillingham and London so these are not your families.
