Sorry to have confused you Robert ( 1787 - 1853) who I think is my. 4th great grandfather was a farrier in 1851.

I just want to confirm that he is the father of Robert 1810 - 1868 who married Charlotte, he was a mariner. I confirm that he is the person in the 1951 census as outlined by Rosie 99

Re death of Robert 1810 have been unable to confirm, 1868 on ancestry it is stated that he is buried in Mere Knolls Cemetery, Sunderland, that has been transcribed on to the Internet but I find loads of Lays but alas not him !!!

This could be the death -
Dec qtr 1868 Sunderland 10a 371
Leg, Robert William
age 56

Durham Records Online - free index has a burial of Robert William Ley in 1869, age 56, abode 34 Whitburn Street. From Cemetery Registers, Sunderland area. Doesn't tell us the name of the cemetery though
Appears the GRO indexers misread the name!

There is an admittance and discharge record 3 May 1817 St George in the East for Robert Lay 34, Jane Lay 21, Robert Lay 7 and Mary Lay 5.

There were five of them! -
Robert Lay 34
Jane Lay 21
Robert Lay 7
Mary Lay 5
William Lay 1

Saint George in the East Workhouse, Admission and Discharge Register, April 1816 - Oct 1817
Admitted 3 May 1817, discharged on the 9th

Could tie in with the 1816 baptism from Rosie

Oops, Rosie had already spotted that - sorry!

Perhaps you could consider getting the birth cert of Robert Ridley Lay, 1838? Is it possible that he was  actually the son of one of Robert and Jane's daughters? Can't see a baptism for him, unlike their earlier children. Perhaps though that was because of civil registration, they just didn't bother.
And in 1851 they also have a daughter Jane, born 1841, but not baptized until 1855.

Thanks John and Rosie99 Sarah Berner has come up before but I can't seem to find any more information linking her to Robert Lay 1787, and getting back to Ancestry again sorry I cant find any reference to daughter Jane who would have been born  in or around 1812

Good spotting John ....with misspelt name Robert Ley  instead of Lay 1811

...getting back to Ancestry again sorry I cant find any reference to daughter Jane who would have been born  in or around 1812

Ancestry's database does not have every parish register.  Some have not survived, some are indexed by other organistions, some are not online at all, and of course the child had to be baptised in the first place to be recorded.

Who is "daughter Jane who would have been born  in or around 1812"?  The family group in 1817 was Robert Lay 34, Jane Lay 21, Robert Lay 7, Mary Lay 5 and William aged 1.  Jane is probably only the mother of William, the other two being from Robert's first marriage.

Perhaps you could consider getting the birth cert of Robert Ridley Lay, 1838? Is it possible that he was  actually the son of one of Robert and Jane's daughters?

I agree  :D

Jane was still young enough to be having children,  he fits with the spacing of the other baptisms, and he said his father was Robert LAY on his first marriage and Robert LAY, Farrier, on his second marriage.  However if the first Robert didn't die then it seems unlikely (but not unheard of) that there would be two sons with the same name.

Debra  :)
