Harry PELL
« on: Wednesday 06 January 16 21:45 GMT (UK) »
I have just found in my late fathers possessions a beautiful Mason type sash with a suspended metal brass/gold plate with the following engraving: The Harry PELL, Society, Sick, Benefit, Est 1899.

In the centre of the plate is a beautiful porcelain picture of Harry Pell, possibly in his late 40s?

I have been unable to find anything on Harry surfing the net - would really appreciate help in tracking down the Society and Harry.

Bobby

Hi Bobby, and a warm welcome to rootschat. :)

What country ( and area) was the sash found in? ( it helps others to know where to begin to search for Harry Pell ).
With a quick Google search I couldn't find anything either. There are quite a few Harry (and Henry, also a few with Harry as a middle name) Pell's in the censuses in England, but it would be pointless for me and others to look through them all if the event of this society occurred in another country of the British Isles, or in the USA , or Australia for example.
A newspaper search in the said country may prove to be fruitful too( there a few Harry Pell's in the old newspapers in Britain). What was your father's occupation? ( don't need his name) as it may turn out to be useful to what type of society it was, for example there's a Harry Pell conductor (orchestra) who appears in  British newspapers quite frequently.

If possible, can you take a photo of the item with Harry's picture and upload it on here, someone may recognise something that may turn out to be helpful in your search.
Kind Regards :)

Hi again,
I think I've found the society ;D " Harry Pell Hairdresser's provident Sick and Burial  friendly society"34 Kingly Street, Regent Street, 1899    my source is  from "Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons HMSO 1913 - Legislation"  page 27 friendly societies. " .
Bobby,  search on google books with the words Harry Pell
also  from this  too on google books  "Commonwealth Shipping Committee H.M. Stationery Office, 1912 - Shipping" page 27
Registry of Friendly Societies (Great Britain).House of Commons, 1928 - Fraternal organizations 1928 " Harry Pell Hairdressers P. Sick & B.F.S., The Clachan, 34 Kingly St., Regent St., W.l 911

From memory - when I searched on ancestry earlier in the day (or it may have been in the old newspapers I searched), I'm pretty sure I came across a Harry Pell, or a Pell who was a hairdresser, but didn't take too much notice of all the individual Harry Pells as I didn't know what country your search was in

Kind Regards  :)

Many thanks for your kind assistance which is very much appreciated.

This Harry Pell society maybe linked to a relative who was a hairdresser in Harrods.

Kind regards,

Bobby

You're welcome Bobby :)
It's good to know It fits with some of your relatives occupations.

Kind Regards:)

ps, edited to add ;  There's a Harry Pell in Colchester who is a hairdresser ( shop was in High ST - according to the newspapers)
1891 census  he's living in High st Colchester

In 1881 census Harry Pell born abt 1844 , a widower, living in 18 Richmond road , civil parish Paddington in London. He's a Hairdresser. Lodging with a family called Voyce . The 1881 says he was born in London. His birth in this 1881 census I think is incorrect because there is a Harry Pell with the same birth date, who is a Hairdresser  who is living in Paddington London in 1871 with wife Lucy A Pell. For this 1871 census he says he's born in Brighton sussex - Then in 1891, he's in Colchester  in High street (same as what Essex Standard Saturday, May 16, 1891 newspaper says)  with I presume his second wife Mary Ann .

1861 census - he's in his birthplace Brighton and is a hairdresser, in 1851 census he is in Brighton ,his father Christopher  is a printer
