Timothy Benton
« on: Saturday 09 January 16 09:06 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the parents of Timothy Benton b1801 - d1895. He was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He married a Mary Feast 1797-1878 plus two others. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Robert

You may already have this but a James Benton was one of the witnesses on his marriage to Mary Feast in 1822. He could be father or brother.
I am struggling to find Timothy on any census. Did he stay in the London area? His son William married Frances Rebecca Feast (relative?) in the same chapel in St Pancras in 1843. Both William and Timothy were sawyers.
A James Benton (widower) married Susan Monk in 1824 in St Pancras. Unfortunately James made his mark so no signatures to compare to see if it was the same James who witnessed Timothy's marriage.
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Found him in 1841 now, occupation Sawyer (as on son's marriage record) living in Middlesex, not born in county. Age 39 (enumerator hasn't followed instructions and rounded age down). If correct that would make his dob between 7 Jun 1801 and 6 June 1802.
He is with Mary and what looks like Thomas (son?)
He is included on several on line trees with a birthday of 22 February most have 1801 but one has 1802. Presumably this is taken from his death record in New Zealand. has Tunbridge Wells as place of birth also come from death record?

William (Timothy and Mary's son) was born on 21 Oct 1821 and baptised on 16th Jun 1822. There is a note in the margin of the baptism record about an affadavit. Could the affadavit be because he was born and baptised before the couple married (marriage 10 Nov 1822)?

Hi LizziL,
Timothy Benton was born on the 22-2-1801, date was on death cert as well as marriage cert. He married three times, 1. Mary Feast 1797-1878, 2. Alexandra Feast, 3. Mary Keach. I didn't know about his son William, as we only knew of daughters Frances ( Standen) Eliza (Brown) & son Thomas. We did get his birth place from the death cert, so that may not be correct. Many thanks for your help.
Robert

Alexandra seems to be the wife of a different Timothy Benton (one that died in 1927) will is on familysearch.

Timothy says he's 39 on the 1841 census and 36 when he emigrates in 1842. If he was 39 on census day 1841, assuming February birthday is correct, he would be just under age when he married Mary Feast and would need parental consent.
