Copy certificate for Isle of Man marriage?
« on: Saturday 09 January 16 13:28 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please tell me whether/how it's possible to obtain a copy of a marriage certificate for a marriage in 1845 at Malew. If so, could you also tell me what information would be on a certificate - I'd be specifically looking for the name of the groom's father.   The marriage I'm looking for is for that of John George Dakin to Elizabeth Leyland 18th December 1845.
many thanks

Civil Registration on the Isle of Man came much later than the rest of the UK!
Marriage registration became compulsory in 1884, although there are entries before that date.

Registered marriages began in 1845.

A parish register entry would be the place to go.

If no one else offers help, I could take a look at the Malew parish registers on Monday?

Oh thank you both for this information and for a link to the image.  Seems there's no more info to be had in regards to groom's surname.  I had a hunch that civil registration might be different in the IoM.
Many thanks for your help with this - much appreciated

I managed to find a baptism in Malew, for an Elizabeth, who may be the bride?
23rd August 1818, daughter of Daniel Leyland and Ann Garratt.

But no baptism, in Malew, of any Dakin? ::)

Castletown was a garrison town in those days - maybe he was in the Army?

Burials, all at Malew:

Dakin, Elizabeth   age 53   25th July 1872
Dakin, Charles Jabet   age 6   17 February 1859
Dakin, Geoffrey   10 months   10 July 1860
Dakin, Scott   2 months   19 December 1851

Looks like John George was born in England, 1821?
Some trees on Ancestry say Cheshire.

I ought to point out that Castletown was the capital of the Isle of Man until 1869!
The Tynwald and the House of Keys (IoM Parliament) was situated there at that time.

As a draper, he would have been a busy man!
