David Shaw, born c1797, Anwoth,
« on: Saturday 09 January 16 21:08 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the death of David Shaw, born c1797 at Anwoth (from Census) who was married to Janet Milligan.  I have in in the Census returns up to 1871, and he lived in Back (Catherine) Street, Gatehouse of Fleet, with wife Janet. He and Janet are not on the deaths for Girthon/Anwoth.

Thanks

Tom

He died in Minnigaff in 1871 and you can get a copy from Scotland's People.

Hi Tom,

I have Shaw connections in Anwoth and wondered if there could be a link.

I have a William Shaw born c1826 in Anwoth, 2nd son of John Shaw & Mary Shennan. Is any of this relevant to you. My Shaw family were scattered - Buittle, Twynholm, Balmaghie, Tongland to name but a few.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Diane,

I have a William Shaw born 1825 born Girthon to David Shaw and Margaret Carson, he married a Margaret Shannon, they ended up at Balmaclellan.  Probably a connection somewhere.

I have a Mary Wilson Shennan born 1850 at Crossmichael.  Her son James Neil married my great aunt Elizabeth Duff in 1922 at Gatehouse. Elizabeth's great grandfather was a Peter McCracken from Wigtownshire.  Peter is my 5x great grandfather.  Hope you understand all that :-)

Tom

Hi Tom,

Couldn't believe when the McCracken name from Wigtownshire popped up. I too have McCrackens in my tree. They were on my maternal grandfather's side of the family. The Shaw family were on my paternal grandmother's side of the family.

I think I may need to do a bit more digging to see if there is a connection somewhere. My McCrackens were from Portpatrick. My great great grandfather was John McCracken and he was a Captain for the Stranraer/Larne Steamboat Company!

Diane,

With regards to Peter McCracken, in 1860 when his wife died, his occupation on her death certificate is Master Mariner.  On his son's marriage cert. in 1865 it down as seaman.
