Clifford House/Robert Hornsby/M Forster?
« on: Monday 11 January 16 11:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi. My mum's cousin has asked me to find out about this photograph and the note in her mother's pile of letters. She is in her 80s and doesn't use a computer so I said I would try and help. The photograph of the house looks like a formal post card and is dated 1903. On the back it says 'To Mr  Robert Hornsby with best wishes Clifford House, Namsterts? and then M Forster. At first I thought it might be something to do with the children's foster home run by Cliffords House but i have been in touch with them and it isn't one of theirs. I do have Forsters in my tree but after several years am no closer to solving this one. The whole family came from County Durham and continued to live there so I am making an educated guess that this hour is in this county. Please does anyone recognise anything about this? Thanks
Alison

This house looks smaller than the one in the photo.

It is called Clifford House Farm, near Esh in the Durham County Advertiser, there is no other Clifford House mentioned, in the papers.

William Ridley was at Clifford House, Hamsteels, Quebec in 1906:

...and he (or someone by that name) was still listed there in Kelly's directories in the 1930s.

Thank you! I have now got more information in a few minutes than I have got over the last two years! I wish I had put a post up here earlier. Unfortunately I don't have the card itself, just a photocopy of the photograph and mum's cousin's transcription of the back.
I will look into the Quebec link now.
Thanks again
Alison
