Frank Terrace Gateshead, Thompson Family, 1881 Census
« on: Tuesday 12 January 16 12:46 GMT (UK) »
Regarding the 1881 census, I am unable to find my family, the information I have is that my Grandfather was born on 27/09/1880 and his birth certificate has the address as 31 Frank Terrace Gateshead and occupation of his father as Coal Merchant. The 1883 Directory of Gateshead (Trades section) has his father Henry Edward Thompson, coal merchant residing at 20 Frank Terrace. You would assume (but you should never assume!!!) that they were at one of those addresses in 1881. I have gone through the whole of Frank Terrace number by number in the 1881 census of which just only half of the numbers, from 1-71 are listed on the census and no result. I have also gone through surname plus various Christian names, again no results. I am using Find My Past
My family details are:
Surname - Thompson
Henry Edward b. 18/08/1847
Jane nee Dobson b. 11/05/1849
Children:
Jane Ellen b. 1870
Maria b. 1874
Thomas Murray b. 1876
Henrietta b. 1878
Ella b. 1879
William Dobson b.1880

Is it common for houses/streets to be missed? Any information or advice I would be so grateful.

It does happen

And it looks as if it has happened here!

I cant see them on 1881 either.

I see by 1891 they are living in Bright Street and dad is an Assurance agent. But even if they moved straight after Williams birth, and the 1883 directory was wrong, they should be findable in 1881.

Not an answer to your question but Frank Terrace seemed to be quite middle class but in 2002 it was past its prime.

Hi Liz,
Wow such a quick reply, thank you so much, I think you have confirmed that they were missed off the 1881 census. I have found them on all other census 1871 - 1911 and have also visited their addresses from 1891 onwards (I was born in Newcastle but have spent many years in Australia). Once again thank you so much for looking into this for me.

Hi Barry,
Thank you for your reply, I had already found these photo's on the internet. The row of houses that comprised Frank Terrace were demolished in 1970. I was at the spot last year and a block of flats, some houses and greenery are in their place. They certainly were at the end of their lifespan. Cheers, Paul Thompson

The enumerator in 1881 of District 40 has missed out the block of houses between North Tyne Street and Frank Street, which are numbers 27-35 Frank Terrace. North Tyne Street is the boundary between the enumeration districts 40 and 41, so he either forgot to include them when distributing the schedules, or failed to collect them afterwards.

Hi Stan,
Once again thank you for your prompt reply and answering my query. As the 1881 census was only 6 months after the birth of my grandfather I am sure they would have been at the same address.
Cheers, Paul Thompson
