Try the censuses at www.freecen.org & the 1881 and some others are available [free] on www.familysearch.org. Don't forget to use a phonetic search on the surname - notoriously variable spellings of that name  :D

It would also be very helpful if you told us what you DO know so far, and what other resources you have researched.

Do you know his occupation? familysearch is showing an army pension for a James McLoughlin born 1843
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5CS-GBS
another born 1841
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5CQ-WKX
and one born 1842
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5CS-2S6
all born Derry [Londonderry]

Thank you for the advice and information Josey. Unfortunately I am estimating his date of birth. He had 2 siblings Michael and Sarah in Ireland, who were born in 1845 and 1846 and no other information

What are your sources of information about his parentage & siblings?

The RC parish registers are online to browse free at http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx, you seem to know the parish. If you can confirm his year of birth from those it may be possible to find James in UK censuses.

Witnesses to marriages did not have to state their residence, how do you know he was living in Eccles?

PS This seems like a lot of questions to answer your own, but it's important RC members/volunteers know the source, provenance & extent of your existing information  :D

There are no records of James or his siblings place or date of birth. His siblings Michael died 1900 aged 55; and Sarah died 1896 aged 50. Both born in the 1840's and from this I assumed that James was born in the 1840's. the following is a transcription from Roots Ireland of Sarah's marriage certificate.
                                                                                                                                        Date of Marriage: 28-Aug-1882
Parish / District: LIMAVADY
Husband Name: Thomas O'Kane
Address: Artigarvan
Wife Name: Sarah McLaughlin
Address: Dunbeg
Husband's Father: Samuel O'Kane
Husband's Mother: Anne Loughrey
Wife's Father: Philip McLaughlin
Wife's Mother: Margaret   Mullan
Witness 1: James McLaughlin
Witness 2: Unity Gibson
Notes:
REV.EDWARD MCKENNA.  DISP. IN BANNS.
FIRST SPONSOR FROM ECCLES, ENGLAND.
SECOND SPONSOR FROM PAROCHIAL HOUSE, LIMAVADY. I have since learned that he was a shop assistant presumably in Eccles.

Sorry I forgot to add that I have spent days searching the NLI records. I also have death certificates of  James' parents and siblings, and marriage certificates of his siblings. Thank you for your help

Never seen so much information on a marriage from rootsireland, that's lucky. Also never seen the marriage witness also called a sponsor - I have only seen sponsors for baptisms.

I have drawn a blank in the 1881 & 1891 censuses for any James McLaughlin & variations born 1845 +- 10 yrs Ireland living in Eccles, which will presumably lie in the Salford area.  There is a James McLoughlin born ca 1843 Ireland living in Salford but he is a plasterer, 1871 RG10; Piece: 4026; Folio: 32; Page: 20, 1881 RG11; Piece: 3975; Folio: 112; Page: 12.  Sorry....
