1871-1881 Census Search Help Needed
« on: Thursday 14 January 16 06:00 GMT (UK) »
Can someone help me please? I am trying to find the 1871 and 1881 UK Census for my third great grandfather Thomas William Anderson. He was born about 1864-5 in County Durham (later census' are indicating Ryhope). I have him married in 1888 to my third great grandmother Alice Ranton. (Leading them to be on the 1891, 1901, and 1911 UK Census' together.) However, I lack census data for him in 1871 and 1881 meaning I lose out on his formative years/parent's names.

Help?

If you confirm the exact census details (inc ref) in 1891, that would save us all making any mistakes of starting incorrectly.

Thanks

As I expect you have seen ( I guess you have census access as you have found 1891 onwards) there are lots of Thomas Andersons, born within a year or two of 1864, born in County Durham, none specifying Ryhope.
So I think the problem is not one of not being able to find him, but more of knowing which he may or may not be.
To help, we will need some more info. Who does he name as his father when he marries? And what occupation? Who are the witnesses at his marriage?

I will take a look at 1881, but as it is free to search I imagine you have already looked there and found nothing obvious. So same will apply.

Do the later censuses give any more clues? Any rellies staying with them, for example?

This seems to be his birth:

Birth
Jul/Aug/Sep 1864
Sunderland
Ref 10a 487
Thomas William Anderson

A birth cert would tell you his parents, with the added bonus of his mothers maiden name too.

Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Another look at 1871, just using Anderson and Ryhope, brings this possibility:

Brick Row, Ryhope
John Thirwell 55 widower horsekeeper
& children
William Anderson 6 nephew bn Ryhope

he could well be known by his middle name?

As someone else posted the marriage index details, I can say his wife definitely was Alice Ranton and that leaves Mary Anne Lee and James Anderson if they are brothers or father son I do not know, I will reach out to the Durham library and ask them to check for me.

Just in case this proves to be the correct family - John Thirlwell's wife was a Jane Anderson and his sister in law was Isabella Anderson - b 1829 Newbottle - who was I think working as a servant in Ryhope in 1861 for William Livingston and family.
