Bastardy Bonds Cheshire
« on: Friday 15 January 16 03:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace an ancestor who may have been have been born out of wedlock. He was baptised in Bidstone,Cheshire in 1781 with no record of father. If the parish made a claim against the father, where would I find them and how can I access them?
Are they in the Chester Quarter sessions or elsewhere?
All help much appreciated!

I doubt it would be a matter for a Quarter Session. If you search the Cheshire Record Office you get no hits. You can contact them by phone, email or letter about the records they hold.

You might find them in the Quarter Sessions but the first place to look would be the parish chest.
Bastardy examinations, bastardy bonds, warrants and summons may all appear there as would the bastardy order.
The examinations would be carried out by the churchwarden or by the overseers of the poor.
Look for payments from the father in Churchwarden's accounts and Overseers of the Poor accounts,

Cheers

At that date it would have nothing to do with the Chester Quarter sessions.
The Poor Law Amendment Act 1844 took bastardy proceedings out of the poor law authorities and turned then into a civil matter between parents. The  Bastardy Act of 1845 enabled an unmarried mother to apply to the Petty Sessions for an affiliation order against the father for maintenance of the mother and child.

Hi,

Thanks Ken,Guy and Stan for your thoughts. So it looks like if anywhere the info I'm looking for will be in the Parish Records somewhere.Do you think it is possible to find anything online?

Thanks
John
