Costers Yard, Fareham, Hampshire
« on: Thursday 21 January 16 13:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone, I am hoping someone will know where Costers Yard was in Fareham, my ancestor lived here in 1881 but I am unable to locate it on any map or search I've come across.  Have I made a classic school boy error?
Thank you

Hi

Welcome to rootschat  :-\
For anyone looking the reference for Costers Yard in 1881 is RG11/1168 f55 page 33.

The streets either side Costers Yard are showing as West St / Western Court and the houses named after are Church Park -Manor House - Manor Cotts / Villas.  Have you tried to locate these places.

Rosie

There is an address in 1911 of Cawtes Place, Costers Yard, West Street. You can see Cawtes Place on the 1952 map at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/458013/106228/13/101329 you will have to zoom out.

On the link I gave you, West Street is pretty much at the top of the page.  Follow West Street along to the right, almost until it meets East Street.  Church Park is shown as being just off the page to the north.  I wonder if the area around the Market Hall was known as Costers Yard?

It looks as though Cawtes Place is still there see http://www.rootschat.com/links/01gw6/ unfortunately it is a pedestrian precinct so it is not on Google Street view.

Just to say that in 1911 the householders give their addresses as Cawtes Place, West Street, but the enumerator has called it Costers Yard, West Street.

Hi

I live in Fareham and I know where Cawtes Place is.  I could go down and have a look and take some pics if that would be of interest.
