Killed in Woolaton Pit
« on: Saturday 16 July 05 21:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My relative Arthur Simpson was killed in an accident at Woolaton Pit in 1921.

Is it possible to find out anything more, i.e. would there have been a coroner's report, and if so where might it be ?

Hi Bob

I think your easiest way to find out details is through the local newspaper.

The Nottingham Evening Post and the Nottingham Evening News published several editions each day and things like Fatal accidents in the colleries would make headline news as would the coronors report a few days later.

Copies of the newspapers (on film) should be found in most Nottinghamshire Libraries.

This is a copy of the report concerning one of my ancestors inquests found in the Nottingam Evening News in 1906 (Dads Brother)

Hi Bob

I see from your profile that you are in S Derbys, this could be close like Long Eaton or miles away. If you are not mobile let me know and I can look in the Beeston Gazette and Echo for you at Beeston Library. The Evening Post and other papers are on microfilm at The County Library at Angel Row Nottm just up from Yates and the Bell Inn.

Thanks Jane,

I always do that as well, and sometimes get a surprise when I find someone in Australia is giving me help on somewhere comparatively local.

I live near Burton on Trent, but am working on Arthur Simpson with my cousin, Arthur's grandson who lives in W Bridgford.

He intends to get to the library soon, but if he has any problems I'll get back to you and may take up your offer.

Thanks again Bob.

Hi Bob

I looked in the Beeston Gazette and Echo in the library for 1921 but couldn't find anything. Do you have a date or month?

Hi,

Sorry for delay been on hols - Arthurs death was registered 4th Qtr 1921, and we have a bill from the undertakers for a grave at Lenton Church dated 3/12/1921, so we guess November as month of death. We should also be checking out the churchyard if it still exists.

Jane,

I've just been catching up on my emails, and my cousin, (Arthurs grandson) now has a copy of the death certificate.

It states he was killed by a roof fall in RADFORD pit (not as we thought Woolaton) on 29th Nov, 1921, and lived at Bright Street, Radford.

Hi Jane,

Another progress report from my cousin -

"Went to the library in town,on the bus !, no problem finding the records which consisted of roll film, but the room was very light, the quality of the film poor-very dark and small print. Anyway I struggled to look over a period of one week but gave up in the end. The librarian gave me an adress of a H&S office in Sheffield which apparently keeps records of all mining accidents so I wrote to them last week and await their reply."

So maybe we'll get all the answers now.
