What uniform is this?
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 08:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I've recently been passed some old family photos and I wondered if you could help me with one.

Can anyone tell me any information about the uniform in this photo?

Thank you

1904 From the hat) to 1914 infantry regiment. The pointed cuffs were re-introduced c1901. The collar and cuffs are probably blue making it a 'royal' regiment.

Where was his family living? You need a much better scan of the badges

Thank you.

They were living in Odiham, Hampshire when this was taken.

Sadly the original, physical image is about 4" x 3" and so the details are lost.

 Edit: just rescanning it now...

Looking at the general shape of the cap badge and the collar badges, although blurred it may well be the Hampshire Regiment.

My thoughts also, James, but I was thrown off by the comment about it perhaps being a "Royal" regiment. The Hampshires were not, of course, "Royals" at this time. Their facings from 1904 on were Yellow and this may be the shading we can see on the photo, although I would have thought Yellow would show up brighter.

Smart uniform, though  :)

Collar and cuffs are different colours to my eyes, though the dress was more or less standard "walking out" kit including cane, still looking for a dress uniform of pre ww1 Hampshires.
