Welcome to rootschat!

I know you have your gt grandfather on the 1911, but have you managed to find him on earlier censuses in this country?  Censuses were taken every 10 years from 1841.  If you can find him, you might be able to narrow down when he came to England, and whether he came with his parents etc.

Also, if  you don't mind posting his name, then people might be able to give you a hand.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, are you certain of "Holland" or could it be Great Holland which is in Essex?

Or even Holland on Sea which is also in Essex

James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

hi,yes he is on the 1891,1901 and 1911 census, stating foreign or Holland= resident, also his british marriage certificate=1881 states occupation mariner, before all these dates I have found nothing, so assume he is a dutch mariner who stayed and lived and worked as a Docker in England until his death 1923, so how do I go about tracing a dutch mariner from Holland, I am sure Holland=Netherlands as 1911 census states Holland =resident and 1891,1901 state Holland or foreign,I will post details I have on him very soon, many thanks p
