The will for Mottershead Swindells is on findmypast Cheshire wills - well, he died intestate so there is no will nicely naming wife and children etc, but there are letters of administration.
It is not quite straight forward.
He seems to have died 6th Sept 1824, administration going to his wife Sarah. Goods under 3000 pounds. (Quite wealthy).
He was a 'silk manufacturer', so you wouldn't expect his son to give his occupation as lowly weaver I'd have thought. Just my opinion.
There is also a record for 1841 where Sarah has died and the administration goes to her daughter Elizabeth Walmsley, wife of Samuel Broster Walmsley. Goods now under 20 pounds. (not so wealthy!).
No mention of a son anywhere, but that's not to say there wasn't one.
I had a look for an application for a marriage licence for Peter and Sarah, again on FindMyPast and again often really useful, but unfortunately no luck.
Do you know the children of Peter and Sarah?
Do they give any clues as to what his father may have been called?
Ah ha. I see the Peter ch 1814 is of Motterhead and Jemima. There seem to be two Motterhead Swindells in MAcclesfield having children in the same period. How odd. There are licences for both of them, and at a swift glance, their signatures are very different, so it look as if they're definitely two different people. And one can't be the son of the other I don't think. And no Peter with mother Sarah, so that rules out Mottershead above.
Sorry, no nearer knowing after all that!
Good luck!
