Patons in Co Sligo
« on: Wednesday 27 January 16 02:43 GMT (UK) »
Searching for any information on John Paton born around 1805 in County Sligo.   He came to NSW Australia and died in Molong NSW.   He had a son James P K Paton.  Names of his parents etc. would be appreciated. Thank you. Trish

John Paton was born well before the start of civil registration in Ireland and it's also quite early for records of most churches so there might be little detail on him here (let alone his parents).

In order to see if church records do exist then you'll need to know the family's religion at that time and where they lived (parish if not actual townland).

Have you checked Australian records for clues? marriage and death certificates, assisted passenger lists (as was found on another query of yours), etc.

Thank you for replying.  I have checked BDM lists which is where I have found most of the details for them.  I am really happy I have been able to find what I have through your site.  I do not have a date as to when he may have come to Australia and shipping lists do not appear to give a lot of information.  I am fairly new to this research and perhaps I am missing something else I should be doing.

Newspaper articles sometimes mention Irish origins, other relatives, etc.- have you searched here?
http://trove.nla.gov.au/

The first one I found was John Paton's death announcement-

The AUSTRALIA board will have stickied reference topics at the top of the board which cover resources in New South Wales and all the country.

Added- try convict records  ;)

Just went to the site.  Yes I do have that information, in fact I am planning a trip to Molong as there are lots of Patons in the area.  Our history goes back a fair way in that area.  On re reading your message I had to chuckle at the convict reference.  Are you intimating something I may not know as yet?  We are what we are and I certainly can't change it if that is the case. I tried to put a smiley but it didn't work.

Well, if he's the one from Sligo that married Elizabeth Aull then yes he was a convict.

Now I am really laughing.  I now have a convict in the family and yes he is the one who married Elizabeth Aull..  Maybe there are many more to come.
Thank you aghadowey.
