James Buchanan number 16 possible sweetshop
« on: Saturday 30 January 16 19:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters,
trying to find some information for my American cousin.
James Buchanan ran a sweet or confectionery shop in Glasgow.
A sign above the shop reads James Buchanan with the number 16 on each side of his name. The shop sold Fry's Cocoa and Chocolate. I wondered if any one had a shop directory that maybe identifies the above shop.
Yours,
Wilton Endeavour

Hi WE  :)

Can you add some further details from your American cousin re this James Buchanan? Will help people trying to find out further details from what you mention...For example, census details and years would help in trying to find him on the Post Office Directories here www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Glasgow

Hello Monica, just some dates for James Buchanan so anyone can roughly find out when he had the above shop in Glasgow. James Buchanan was born on 3rd March 1874 in Prestonpans. James died on 23rd July 1962 in Victoria Hospital. That would mean around 1900 onwards making him age 26.

I thought maybe the way that the staff were dressed might give a rough idea of a date of this photograph. Otherwise, it's just a long hard slog through all the Glasgow telephone directories up to around 1916 as I think that's as far as the list goes on the link that you posted Monica. That would also take in the 1901 and 1911 census records too.

Only Shop #16 with a Buchanan. He is listed as a Grocer 16 Main St., Rutherglen from at least 1905-1925.

So he should be in 1911 Census, and he is with his wife Susan and daughter Elsie.

Don

Edit: Rutherglen is SE Glasgow http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400475

I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

WE, just for info. There has been a further release a little while ago of later directories here http://archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3Ascottishdirectories&sort=-publicdate

For Glasgow, they go up to about 1942 from what I have seen.  Haven't been able to find a good way of searching on this listing...except scrolling down the page! The Glasgow set are currently about half way down.

The 1927 Glasgow Directory has also been available here for some time http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~glasgow/index-glas.htm Could see anything jumping out for James for that year.
