Blair Atholl people mentioned in Dunkeld Commissariot wills

We are starting to index those mentioned in the Dunkeld Testaments (wills) of people who died in the parish of Blair Atholl. 

The Scottish Record Society published a book of the Testaments and Inventories including many which are not on the ScotlandsPeople website. As many people are not aware that this is available on-line, we have added a hyperlink on our trial web-page:

Which wills were you after?  We hold some which have been transcribed and are not available on the borenich web-site yet.

There are now 24 Testaments of Blair Atholl people which have been catalogued, so we have changed the format with the testaments in separate decades e.g. 1750-1759.

Three of the testaments have such a wealth of names, relationships, places and personal belongings that we have added links to complete transcriptions for each of these.  The originals are not easy reading and we have done our best with the transcriptions, but some words are nearly impossible to decipher.

We have also added comments where we felt that it might help understanding. For example:  "a large wheel and a small wheel" probably referred to two spinning wheels, not cart wheels; "a churn" would be for butter making, not carrying milk; and "a press" was a cupboard for linen, rather than a device for squeezing.

Any comments and suggestion are most welcome.

We are making good progress with the Dunkeld Testaments for people living in the Blair Atholl area.  Over 50 testaments have now been transcribed and the hundreds of people mentioned in the testaments have been indexed by their decade. e.g. 1720-1730.

Each mentioned person is identified by where they were living, or who they were married to, together with a link to the transcribed document so that you can read it, and the Testament date if you wish to go back and look at the original (not always easy to read).

These early records include references to marriage contracts before the OPR, names of children, some of whom are not in the OPR, names of parents pre-1718, brothers, sisters and other relatives and where they were living, lists of possessions for the deceased, details of money owed and much more.

We hope that this will help, and perhaps encourage people to look at other parishes.
