Ancestors who were coal miners in Derbyshire
« on: Saturday 06 February 16 20:04 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Joseph Brown was a collier/coal miner living in Smithy houses in 1951.  Is there any way I can find where he may have worked.

Many thanks

Hi,

Assume "Smithy Houses" Denby Derbyshire.

In which case he could have been working at Denby Colliery owned by Drury Lowe, this
closed in 1968.
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=denby+colliery&rlz=1C1SVEA_enGB463GB463&espv=2&biw=1242&bih=594&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjtj5GV_uPKAhWEcj4KHQc8CbsQsAQIJQ&dpr=1.1

Near by was the Denby Hall Colliery this was an opencast site until 1999.

You could always send a letter to the Belper News asking if anyone remembers Joseph Brown
of Smithy Houses and which pit he worked at.

Hi

Oh dear I keep doing this I actually meant 1851!!!  Not 1951!

And yes is is Smithy Houses in Denby.  Does that change things re date?

Hi,

Could be either

Denby Hall Colliery or Denby Drury Lowe the latter was know locally as Old Denby.

If you google you  with the above names you will get lots of info and pictures.

Hi,

This is a good site, for general information, you need to scroll down for the Denby pits.

Thank you for info.  Map very interesting.  I am a bit confused about 'Smithy Houses' is this a place?  As I have a few ancestors who are listed as living in 'Smithy Houses' at various times.  But there is never a number!  I have googled it but am still unsure.
