This is my first RootsChat posting.
In 1929 & 1930, my father, Des Shannon (born Liverpool 1913), with his parents & younger brother went on holiday in Ireland. Though my father kept a small diary, the holiday entries are tantalisingly brief. He mentions Delgany & Greystones; visiting Bray, Glendalough, Kilcool, Kilpedder, Kilqude & the Sugar Loaf; & going further afield to Dublin, Avoca & Gorey. So, it's probably a good bet that they were staying somewhere in the Delgany/Greystones area. But why there? Was there a family link to this part of Wicklow?
I have a few photos taken during these holidays that, because of the number of priests in every shot, are known as the ‘Craggy Island’ photos. See attached photo. This was taken outside an unknown hotel (‘HOTEL’ can just be seen in the glass over the door). My father is on the left. To the left of the two priests is my grandfather, Alexander Shannon. His father, John Shannon, left Dublin with his young family for Liverpool in the early 1880s. It's not known who the other family is, but they may be relations, as there is a Shannon myth that the family originally came from Wicklow. However, there may be a clue in the (school?) uniforms the other boys are wearing - identical short trousers and jackets with a distinctive shield badge on the breast pocket. Does anyone recognise this badge and therefore the school? This may be the clue to unlock the mystery.
