Adelaide Duerdon Horton
« on: Monday 08 February 16 19:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am trying to trace the parents of Adelaide Duerdon Horton (born 1873).  Initially I was tracing Eleanor Horton from the Isle of Man living in Toxteth and found the 1881 census although Eleanor is spelt 'Helena' but the others in the house at the time match with the sons/daughters she had at the time and I know she was widowed by 1861.  Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Hi

Going back on census records I notice that Eleanor's husband was named William and was a Waterman (if this is the correct person).

William Horton had married Elleanor Killey on 20/8/1848 -- (her father was Henry Killey a Shoemaker).

However I cannot see a baptism for Adelaide - although there are baptisms for other children. (Liverpool records on Ancestry).

1873 does seem rather late for Eleanor to still be having children and I am wondering if Adelaide may be a grandchild being brought up by Eleanor. This is pure supposition though - as I cannot even see a birth for her at the moment.

By the way -- Eleanor wasn't a widow by 1861 - William is on that census at least -- is that an incorrect date please?
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

HI thank you for your reply.  I think she must be a grandaughter.  I noticed in the 1871 census that there is a John Davidson (grandson) and I am thinking the name may be Adelaide Davidson in the 1881 census not Duerdon as the 1891 census states it is Davidson although I can't find who the parents are for either under Davidson.  I found the burial date for William Horton in Toxteth Park aged 53, a Waterman living in 17 Back Parliment Street buried 19th May 1861.

Hi there. Just linking the family so others can see:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKXX-LGYJ

In 1871 with grandson 'Davidson' (probably John Joseph Davidson b. 1870 d. 1871)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBXD-1RC

and in 1891 Eleanor with 'granddaughters' Adelaide and Mary Davidson:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7SCN-VMM

There are baptisms for Adelaide and Mary Ellen as children of Joseph and Eleanor Davidson:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N5PC-G9G
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNC5-9FH

However your Eleanor's daughter Eleanor (18 in 1871, 28 in 1881), doesn't appear to have married Joseph, as she always appears as Horton in the censuses (and died as Eleanor Horton in 1882 aged 30)

The girls used the name Davidson in later life, and Adelaide listed her father as Joseph Davidson, deceased shipwright, when she married:
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Liverpool/Toxteth/stclement/marriages_1892-1901.html

Given that their father seems to not have been around, and their mother died while Adelaide and Mary were still young, 'deceased shipwright' might have only been as accurate as grandma Eleanor's stories, however...

I seem to remember when my doing my research that Charles Horton was living with his son as a lodger with Adelaide and Alexander Gordon.  I think it was in the 1911 census
