Sarah Searle circa 1789 Sussex UK (Transported to Sydney 1812)
« on: Monday 08 February 16 23:25 GMT (UK) »
On 24/8/1810, Sarah Searle was found guilty by a jury at the Sussex Assizes of stealing plate from her employer, Mr Campion of Westmeston, Sussex. She was sentenced to 7yrs transportation and arrived at Port Jackson on 25th October 1812 with 126 other female convicts aboard the "Minstrel"

Based on information contained in various records/documents she was born around 1789

In 1826 she was found guilty of the manslaughter of her partner John Radley but never actually went to prison because of lack of availabilty of prison space at that time. She and Radley had a daughter, Sophia Radley (Searle) in 1818.

On 8/12/1831 she married a John Ridley.

I am looking for information on Sarah and her family prior to deportation in 1810. Unfortunately I have no information as to her precise birth date or her parents names/ address. Her Certificate of Freedom indicates Sussex UK to be her native place.

Any information which may help in my research would be much appreciated.

Another possible?    13 Jan 1793 in Clapham Sussex, daughter of Edward and Susan?   Or there is one baptised in Wigginholt cum Greatham on 23 Jan 1793 daughter of William and Sarah of Greatham.
This is not going to be easy....

Many thanks Sillgen
I had identified Edward and Susan's daughter as strong possibility and am working on trying to firm up that prospect. The Wigginholt cum Greatham Sarah is one I will now explore. Many thanks.

Hi Silligen

From my resources I have been unable to find Sarah Searle, the daughter of William and Sarah who was baptised in Wiggonholt cum Greatham on 23 January 1793.

Could you please give me guidance as to where you found this record?

Sussex Family History Group transcripts online for members.   Well worth joining them if you have Sussex ancestors.

A very big thank you for that information Sillgen. I have taken notice of your suggestion and joined the SFHG. Looks like I will have to wait for the package before I can access data base (from Sydney)
