Missing from the 1871 England Census
« on: Tuesday 09 February 16 04:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find Laurence John Halket in the 1871 England Census who was born in London in 1849.

In October 1870 he was working as a doctor at The Infirmary, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and in May 1871 he sailed to Australia from either the East India Docks in London or from Deal in Kent.

Any help much appreciated.

Ken

I had a quick look and he hasn't jumped out at me. Do you know the names of any family members such as parents, who he may be staying with?

As it was only a few weeks before he left the country it makes you wonder if he was omitted accidentally or intentionally, or perhaps he was living in temporary accommodation and the landlord did not know his details ....

I'll keep searching ....

PS. Welcome to rootschat.

Thanks,

His father had died and his mothers, sisters and brother were living in Elswick, Newcastle in 1871. I doubt he was that patient in an asylum - different given and surname - but thanks
I think the probability of him being left out of the census, for whatever reason, is most likely.

I saw that one too Norma but his surname is Hackett, he is born Manchester and is a "lunatic" ... so I think not Ken's Laurence.

I have had another try Ken but still no luck finding him although I did find the rest of the family. He could be mistranscribed and hiding somewhere ..... I did wonder if he was in Scotland as he was a doctor and then I noticed his father was from Scotland. I had a look on the indexes but couldn't spot him in Scotland either .... lets hope someone else will have some better luck ...
