Gt Gt Grandfather From Prussia.
« on: Wednesday 10 February 16 23:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello,i have just started my amazing journey into Genealogy starting with my Mothers side,i had heard tale of my ancestor arriving in Scotland on a boat carrying sugar as its cargo from Prussia.
I obtained a  copy of my Gt Gt Grandfather's Wedding Certificate in 1865 (Henry Craft) he married my Gt Gt Grandmother Elizabeth Donaldson in Newburgh Fife they spent the rest of their lives in Leith Edinburgh, Seaman is listed as his occupation, what interests me at the moment is his place of residency in Prussia, i can't make out the first four or five letters but ends in sond or could it be sund.
I have attached a small image of this,if someone could decipher this for me it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
Andy.

Welcome to rootschat Andy.  :)

The image is very small and when I enlarge it it loses clarity.

Is it just the place name you are interested in or are you looking for his place of birth or other details about him?

Maybe a bigger scan might make a difference?

Thank for the welcome Ruskie.
I will try and do a bigger scan,at the moment its the place name, its going to need a bit more research on his birth details.
although i have been doing most of my search on the internet,i am planning a visit to Register house in Edinburgh to find out a bit more.

Andy.

Andy, have you used Scotland's People? You will probably find all you need there.
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

If you can find him in the census his place of birth should be given. His marriage and death certificates will generally give both of his parent's names. All of this is available on Scotlands People, but if you have a subscription to Ancestry or similar, they have (sometimes poor) transcripts of the Scottish censuses (except for 1911 which is only on SP).

Familysearch is not bad for some Scottish records either.

Place name looks like Strasond.  :-\

Added: Googling 'Strasond Prussia' gives only a couple of results, all related to Henry Craft ...

Probably written Strasond (agreeing with Ruskie!), but probably meant to be Stralsund (a noted Baltic seaport).

His parents are noted as Peter Craft (Seaman) and Sophia Rode on an online tree ...

As a port Stralsund sounds a logical place for a Seaman to be based.  :)

Yes spot on,Stralsund seems more logical, thank you Ruskie and Bookbox.

i have got as far as Peter Craft and Sophia, and thanks for that Ruskie that totally confirms it.

With Stralsund being a sea port that also confirms it,

Thank you and will let you know of more developments
