info on Culfin, Galway
« on: Thursday 11 February 16 00:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find a source for information on births in Culfin, Galway around 1850.  We believe, from information on the birth certificate of one of his children, that Patt Malley was born in Culfin around 1850.  He lived in Mullaghglass in 1901 and 1911 with his family.
I believe Culfin is rather small, seems to be a fishing village around the Culfin River.  I wonder if records would actually say Culfin or give the name of a larger town closeby.  Does anyone know of a historian in that area, or which historical society is closest that may be of help?
Thanks for any help.  Ruthi

Are these the census returns for Patrick and his family?  1901 census and 1911 census

If so, it looks as if he married twice as his wife states they are married 15 years

There is a marriage of a Patrick O'MALLEY of Mullaghglass to Bridget KAIN
on Feb 26 1887 in Ballinakill Parish, Co. Galway
The witnesses are Martin KAIN and Mary KAIN
Unfortunately the registers for that area only go up to 1886 www.nli.ie

Hi,
Thank you all who replied.
Schoch, I have checked that site but it was a good reminder to check again, as we all know how we can miss things at first glance.  Culfin just does not appear on either Griffiths or the 1901 or 1911 census.  I'm wondering if it's just one of those small areas referred to by locals but goes by another name for legal purposes.  Mullaghglass, Glassilaun or one of the Lettergeshes would be my guess if that were the case.
Annclare, myluck and dathai, all found the correct family.  The Andrew and John stated were my grandmother's 1/2 brothers.  My grandmother Honor was the daughter of Pat malley's first wife, they were sons of the second.  My problem lies with tracing Patrick, the father, back a generation.  My grandmother's civil birth record says her father was born in Glassilaun,  her brother Thomas' certificate says it was Culfin which is why I am trying to circle in on this place name.  Patrick Malley would have been born abt. 1850 if the census records are close to correct.  Records become rather scarce at this time.
According to Griffiths, one possibility for Patt's parents would be Bridget and Andrew Mealy, from Mullaghglass but that is a wild guess I am trying to prove with few resources.
Thanks so much for replying.  Ruthi

Hi,
it would appear I need to get my eyes checked!  Just figured out that Culfin is listed under Cushkillary, not Ballinakill.  Will be following up on Cushkillary folk.

do you have either of his marriage certificates? this should show his father's name

There is a church marriage of a Patrick MALLEY to Bridget KAIN Feb 26 1887 in Ballynakill but the parents are not shown however I don't see a civil reference for them

You didn't say who his first wife was but again if you check their marriage you should find the father's name matches and perhaps a home address that would pinpoint his origins.  MALLEY is a very common name in that area

Thank you Myluck.  That marriage on Feb 26, 1887 between Patt Malley and Bridget Kain is indeed my greatgrand father and his second wife.  It helps to have the witnesses names on the church record but as you stated there is no mention of parents.  Patt does also appear with his first wife Honor Coyne, my greatgrandmother, on the Sept. 12, 1875 church record.  Again we get witness names but no parents.
I have not yet found a civil record.  On the irishgenealogy.ie site I have tried searching for an index but am stumped when they ask for the civil registration district.  Trying the most obvious to me, being Clifden, does not bring up a plausible marriage.  I don't know where else to look for a civil document for both 1875 and 1887 for a marriage between people in Mullaghglass with the catholic register from Letterfrack parish, diocese of Tuam, Clifden.  Do you have a guess where I might try for a civil record?  Thanks for any help.  Ruth
